Europe is the new destination for vacationers with the steep drop in the value of euro, tourists from all around the world especially the U.S.A and China are finding Europe to be a cheaper destination than the others. American tourists are having a heyday with dollar strength being 25 per cent more than euro. So Europe is definitely the right place to explore. Chinese tourists are also finding Europe to be quite reasonable as their economy has risen by 20 per cent and tourists are looking forward to spending more than they did in the last year. European tourists will feel more comfortable travelling inbound than risking outbound tours specially now when their economy is at a low.
The head of tour operator relations at the European Tour Operators Assn. in London, felt happy that there will be more tourism to look ahead to than the previous year. The euro has been struggling against many currencies but the drop is most distinct against dollar. Where at this time last year the value of euro was $1.40 last year, this year it has gone down to $1.057.
However experts predict that the difference will be lessened by the end of this year.
The European Central Bank’s policies have been weakening the euro, while those of the U.S. Federal Reserve have been bolstering the dollar.
The euro has also been dragged down by fears over Greece’s debts and the bloc’s muted economic growth. American bookings have increased by 20 per cent so far as confirmed by European tourism officials and American travel companies. There has been about 15 to 20 per cent increase in reservation in Greece by tourists from the U.S. Even Spain has seen a 12 per cent rise in January and 19 per cent in February.
More growth is anticipated with the dollar strengthening over euro. Tourists are enjoying more facilities and they feel that they are in for a real bargain. Paris is the top destination among the American tourists. 10 million American tourists have chosen to visits Paris last year and the number is expected to rise to 11 million this year, with high chances of Americans ranking as top visitors this year in Paris.
There will naturally be more spending owing to the favorable exchange rate. Rome is another favorite destination for U.S. tourists.
The city has recorded 7 per cent increase in American visitors this January.
There has been a 17 per cent leap in bookings to Europe according to a New York City based tour operator. Even the usually less visited places in Europe like Dublin, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid and Athens are provoking interest among American travellers who are willing to explore owing to the drop in the European currency.
However new generation Chinese tourists between the ages of 25 to 40 years are willing to spend on top end hotels and restaurants and are spending four times more than an average American traveller, compared to their previous generation. Room rates in top European cities like Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Berlin have dropped by 21%, and down 17% for four star and five-star accommodation respectively. Vacations in Europe have become much cheaper than in America, so Europe is definitely a wiser option for holiday makers this year.
